There is a well-documented memory effect: people retain only about 10 to 20% of written or spoken information after three days, but around 65% when the same information is paired with a relevant image. An explainer that turns an abstract concept into a moving picture is doing exactly that pairing, on purpose, for the part of your pitch that is hardest to remember.
Length matters more than most people expect. In Wistia’s 2025 report, videos under one minute hold the highest average engagement, around 50%, with how-to and explainer-style videos under a minute reaching as high as 82%. Completion tells the same story from another angle: Vidyard’s benchmark data shows about 66% of viewers finish a video under a minute, but only 50% finish something 2 to 10 minutes long. When motion graphics beats every other format
Most guides treat format like a taste question. It is closer to a decision tree. Here is the one I actually walk clients through.
Reach for motion graphics when the subject is abstract or invisible. Software, data, financial mechanics, a multi-step process, anything that has no photogenic physical form. You cannot point a camera at “how our routing engine picks a warehouse,” but you can animate it in fifteen seconds. Google’s own creative research makes the point that video which simplifies complex information drives stronger purchase intent, and animation is the shortest path to that simplification for new or abstract products.
Reach for 2D character animation when the story is about a person. A journey, an emotion, a “day in the life,” a human problem you want the viewer to feel. Reach for 3D when physical form or spatial relationships are the point. Hardware, medical devices, architecture, anything where the viewer needs to understand how parts fit in space. 3D is the slowest and priciest lane, so I only recommend it when a flat diagram would truly lose the plot.
Reach for live action when trust and faces are the product. Founder stories, testimonials, culture films, services sold on human relationships. A real person on camera does something animation cannot fake.
Reach for a screen recording when the interface is simple and the audience is already technical. Faster and lighter than all of the above, and often the honest choice for a straightforward feature walkthrough.
So the short test I use: is the thing you are explaining invisible, abstract, or process-shaped, and does it need to feel polished and on-brand? If yes to both, motion graphics is almost always the right call.
The production process, stage by stage
The single biggest misconception I meet is that the animation is the project. It is not. By the time anyone opens After Effects, most of the decisions that determine whether the video works are already locked. Here is how a real build runs.
1. Brief and goal. Before a word of script, we agree on one job for the video and one audience. “Explain the product” is not a goal. “Get a technical buyer to understand our data-sync model in 75 seconds so the sales call can skip it” is a goal. Everything downstream gets measured against that sentence.
2. Script. This is where the video is won or lost. The script sets the length, the pacing, and every idea the visuals will carry. We write to time, usually aiming for that 60-to-90-second window, and we read it out loud with a stopwatch. A tight script is the least costly edit you will ever make. 3. Voiceover scratch, then style. We record a rough voiceover early, because the animation has to be cut to the narration, not the other way around. In parallel, we design the visual style: color, type, how literal or abstract the graphics will be, how it sits against your brand.
4. Storyboard and design frames. We draw the key moments as still frames so you can approve the look and the visual logic before anything moves. Changing a drawing is fast. Changing an animated scene is not. This is the last low-cost-to-change checkpoint, which is exactly why it exists.
5. Animation. Now the frames move. This is the longest single stage, and it is where the “motion” earns the word: timing, easing, how one idea hands off to the next.
6. Sound and final voiceover. Final narration, music, and sound design go on together. Good sound design goes unnoticed when it works and glares when it is missing.

“Motion graphics” is a family, not a single look. The style you pick should follow the message, not a mood board.

Kinetic typography. Animated text as the lead visual. Best when the words are the message: a bold value proposition, a manifesto, a stat-driven story. Fast to produce, striking when the copy is sharp, thin when the copy is weak.
Iconographic and shape-based. Icons, charts, and abstract shapes that assemble and transform. This is the workhorse of software and B2B explainers because it turns processes and data into something you can watch. Clean, on-brand, quick to reversion for different markets.
2D scene illustration. Simple illustrated environments and objects, sometimes with light characters. A step up in warmth and a step up in hours. Good when you want personality without a full character build.
3D motion. Depth and dimensional objects. The right lane for hardware and spatial concepts, the wrong one for a timeline or a spend that cannot absorb it.
Mixed media. Deliberately combining lanes: real footage under animated overlays, or 2D characters against 3D product shots. Powerful in the right hands, a coordination headache in the wrong ones.

How long it takes, and what actually drives the timeline

One practical note: front-load your feedback. The least costly place to change your mind is the storyboard. The most expensive is after final animation. A client who over-invests attention at the frame stage and under-invests it at delivery gets a better video for less rework, every single time.
How to tell if your explainer is working
A video that nobody measures is a nice asset and a guess. Watch four things.
Completion rate. Given that only about half of viewers finish a two-minute-plus video, your explainer’s finish rate is a direct read on whether the length and pacing are right. A cliff early in the timeline usually means the opening does not earn the next ten seconds.
Engagement and drop-off shape. Most video hosts show you a retention graph. The exact second where people leave tells you which idea lost them. That is the scene to fix, and it is often the one you were most attached to.
The downstream action. Views are vanity. The question is whether the video moved the number it was made to move. Sign-ups after the landing page loop. Replies after the sales email. Fewer “how does this work” support tickets. Tie it back to the goal from step one.
Sales-team feedback. The least glamorous signal and often the truest. If your reps start sending the video instead of re-explaining the product on every call, it works. If they do not touch it, it does not, whatever the view count says.
