A video script says what the viewer sees and hears, line by line, before anyone films. This template uses two columns, picture and sound, with a time for each row so you can check the length as you write.
Page two holds the one-line idea and the details that set the word count. Pages two and three are the script itself. Page four is a filled 60-second product explainer, and page five has a words-per-length table and a checklist.
What is in it
| Part | What it does |
|---|---|
| The idea in one line | Who is watching and what they should do when it ends |
| Details | Length, shape (16:9, 9:16, 1:1), where it plays and the type of voice |
| Script | Time, picture and sound for every shot or beat, across two pages |
| Worked example | A filled 60-second explainer for a scheduling app |
| How many words fit | Words of voiceover for 15 seconds up to 2 minutes |
| Checklist | Seven checks before the script goes to the client |
How to use it
- Write the one-line idea first. If it is vague, the script will be too.
- Fill both columns on every row. An empty picture cell gets filled with stock footage on the day.
- Do not describe the picture in the voice. The voice should add what the picture cannot show.
- Read it out loud with a timer. Then cut until it fits.
What comes next
Once the script is signed off, it turns into a storyboard and a shot list, then a call sheet for each shoot day. Our guide on how to write a video script goes deeper.
If you would rather hand the script and the film to one team, that is what we do at Moonb.
Frequently Asked Questions
About 130 to 150 words of voiceover, at the common pace of around 150 spoken words a minute. Leave room for pauses, music and moments with no voice. If the script runs long, cut words rather than asking the voice to speak faster.
A script with the picture on one side and the sound on the other, often called an audio-visual or AV script. Each row is one shot or beat, so you can see that every line of sound has a picture next to it.
Usually a scriptwriter or the creative lead, working from the brief. The client approves it before anything is filmed, because changing a script costs minutes and changing a finished edit costs days.
